Howdy all

Does anyone know if there's any editing applications out there (Premiere, Vegas, Final Cut) that support stereoscopic editing?  E.g. they can handle two linked data streams?

A good question.

Here is a way around it.  Firstly set up a LEFT and RIGHT drive/folder and ensure that all the source material is named the same.

Do your edit and lock it off.... render it off.

Copy the left files, to where the right files were and re-open your editing software, the timeline should be the same (if you're syncronized) and the frames will match.... render off the other eye.

There are some rules to remember....

When shooting, don't cut when something has protruded towards the audience... it will look like something has disappeared.

Don't cut too quickly, lots of quick cuts can cause headaches over a prolonged period of time.

There are a few others, but I can't remember them off the top of my head at the moment.

I'm doing pretty good with Vegas 4.0. I line up the left and right views one under the other. If you make the top (left view) 50% transparent, you can then line them up and sync them. Works pretty good. There are also free tools on Medtron.com, including a Vegas plug-in.

With premiere and if you have shot with a dual camera rig, just open the left eye on one video track in premiere and the right eye on the other video track.

You can then play with the opacity slider on any of the video tracks to "visually " match up things for negative parallax or frame drift etc and apply your effects.

One more thing, if you want to avoid headaches and nausea for your audiences, never try to do a cross fade from one scene to another.

I know there is a "stereo maker"software package out there that you can google for a link. It is freeware.
It is also recomended for 3D digital binoculars as well. Bincoculars that capture 3D images and then the left/right image are downloaded to the stereo maker software for further editting.

Also from Quantel is the dedicated "Sid" stereoscopic workstation, which will let you edit and preview 1920x1080 HD stereoscopic at 30fps.  It also includes some specialized software tools for adjusting convergence, adding sterescopic titles, etc.
